Paddle |

Blues Point to explore historic Berrys Bay |

This is a new paddle I've just added (not be be
confused with the Berry Island paddle which is now renamed the
Balmain
Paddle).
This is a short 5.5 km paddle ideal for
beginners who aren't sure if they could handle the longer Balmain
Paddle.
We start with a short instructional
session on land then we paddle from Lavender Bay to Balls Head
which is fantastic spot for photos with the Harbour Bridge and
Opera House as a backdrop. We round Balls Head paddling west
into Berry's Bay.
Berry's Bay is bounded by the suburbs
of McMahons Point, Waverton and the bushland reserve of Balls
Head. Our paddle follows the shoreline past some of
Sydney's most expensive residential properties, boat building
yards, marinas, an old Quarantine Station and Balls Head
bushland reserve.
You will probably see yachts such a
Fidelis, which won the Sydney to Hobart in 1966 setting a new
race record. The more modern competitors are often seen at
Noakes Boatyard undergoing maintenance and refit. On the
western side of the Bay we usually paddle past the
magnificiently restored Ena a 1901 steam
yacht, built for Sir
Thomas Dibbs whose home was the Graythwaite mansion
nearby (you might have noticed signs around North Sydney "Save
Graythwaite").
If we have time we can land below Balls
Head and stretch our legs and if we have plenty of time we
could even run up the hill for a quick view from the headland.
It's the highest natural point on the harbour after North
Head.
